The importance of students practising their counselling skills for assessment
Practising counselling skills is an essential part of any counselling program. By practising, students can develop their skills and become more confident in their ability to help clients. There are many different ways to practice counselling skills, including:
Role-playing: In role-playing, students take turns playing the role of the counsellor and the client. This allows students to practice different counselling skills and receive feedback from their classmates.
Observing counselling sessions: Students can also learn by observing experienced counsellors by watching videos of counselling sessions.
Counselling clients: Once students have developed their skills, they can begin counselling clients. This is the best way to learn how to apply counselling skills in a real-world setting.
Assessment is an important part of any counselling program. Students can identify areas where they need to improve by assessing their skills. This information can then be used to guide their future learning. There are many different ways to assess counselling skills, including:
Self-assessment: Students can reflect on their own skills and identify areas where they need to improve.
Peer assessment: Students can receive feedback on their counselling skills from their classmates.
Supervision: Students can receive feedback from a supervisor on their counselling skills.
By practising their counselling skills and receiving feedback, students can develop the skills they need to be effective counsellors.
In addition to the benefits mentioned above, practising counselling skills can also help students to:
Develop empathy and compassion for others
Learn how to build rapport with clients
Gain confidence in their ability to help others
Improve their communication skills
Learn how to handle difficult situations

The summary at the end for me felt like the best of all worlds. I agree with you, we should be empathic and congruent as Carl Rogers mentions in his person centred approach while being open to the needs of the clients. I personally also think that before you start direct confrontation and giving solutions, that the person must first have a good idea about who they themselves are and how they got to where they are now. If they do not dwell in the past and can handle criticism well then I guess it is good to switch to more direct approaches and either guide them to solutions through hypotheses together or by directly talking about it. It can also save the client time if they are ready for solutions instead of looking to understand themselves. For those who like to know where I am coming from. I speak from personal experience as a client and I am not a therapist. I have just started my applied psychology bachelor and so my opinion on the several approaches might change over time. Have a nice day to all who read this! :)

You guys are true lifesavers. I have been running around to no avail trying to find the answers that you have so graciously answered here. I however would like to know if the therapy notes are same or a component of case conceptualisation where we might need to hypothesize about the client's presenting issues. Also, how important are mentioning the client's physical appearance, tone of speech and such non-verbal cues in the session notes.

Congruence should be in the service of client, we cannot bring something that will derail the conversation, and tell the client that’s what he did was not a good response, may be he or she don’t know the other way to respond it.

I asked my therapist about this, . I asked, if my mother came to you and told you about her sensitive, paranoid, emotional, dramatic daughter (everything that my mother thinks I am) would you be as kind to her as you are to me? My therapist was very kind to me and very validating and it made me wonder. Do I deserve to be validated? Do some people go to therapy looking for validation and end up being challenged instead? (i didn't feel that that was my experience.)
